Shimizu Mon
Mon means "crest" in Japanese. This print represents the Shimizu Family Crest. The main crest pattern, with the three petals or leaves of the katabami, (wood sorrel) and three sword symbols, is the crest of my husband's family. The black outline, as well as the stylized background shapes, represents the crest of my friend Leslie Takeo's Shimizu family ancestors in Hawaii.
Shimizu Mon was carved from four blocks of basswood plywood.
